Sun Country Unveils It’s First Ever Special Livery
Today, Minnesota based LCC Sun Country Airlines announced their first ever special livery, apart from a couple of TUI/Transavia hybrids active for a brief period. Sun Country is big in the college sports charter business, and is the chief charter carrier for the University of Minnesota’s Gophers, the school’s athletics teams.
This afternoon, the airline announced that one of their B737-800s, N809SY, would feature a special livery commemorating the school’s longstanding relationship with the airlines.
"Sun Country is proud to debut this aircraft design that illustrates our hometown pride and longstanding partnership between two iconic Minnesota organizations,” said Grant Whitney, Senior Vice President and Chief Revenue Officer at Sun Country. “We look forward to continuing our multi-year partnership with Gopher Athletics and will root for them for years to come.”
“This is a tremendous extension between two proud Minnesota brands,” said Minnesota Senior Associate Athletic Director Mike Wierzbicki. “We take great pride in our relationship with Sun Country. They have been a tremendous partner, and we are excited for Minnesota fans and college sports fans to see the Minnesota Block M and Maroon and Gold flying all over the country."
The livery features the iconic gold and maroon colors of the University of Minnesota, the ninth-largest public university in the country by student body. On the rear section of the aircraft is the “M” logo of the school, along with Sun Country’s signature tail logo, but instead of the usual bright red and vibrant blue, the University of Minnesota’s colors.
N809SY, a 19 year old Boeing 737-8Q8, was delivered brand new to Sun Country on July 3rd, 2005. It sports a clean safety record with two CFMI CFM56-7B27 power plants. It briefly served a stint in 2009 on a lease with Caribbean Airlines, before coming back up to Minnesota.
