Sun Country Airlines's Biggest Route Expansion

Thanks @Pinecone

Part of it has been taken from @Pinecone’s thread. Thanks to @Pinecone for allowing me to remake Sun Country’s route expansion to not only feature KPVD, but 6 other airports added to Sun Country’s route network.

Sun Country Airlines to Start Service to KPVD

About Sun Country Airlines

Sun Country is a low-cost airline headquartered in Eagan, Minnesota and based at Minneapolis Saint-Paul International Airport (MSP/KMSP). They operate about 70 routes, which are mostly destinations between the United States, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean.

What’s going on?

Sun Country recently announced that they are going to have the biggest route expansion in their history. They will be opening up 19 new routes along with 7 new airports. This expansion is largely focusing on its presence in the northeast, where they do not have many routes.

New Airports

Sun Country Airlines expanded to a total of 7 new airports. The airports are listed below:

  • KEWR (Newark-Liberty International Airport)
  • KIAD (Dulles International Airport) (@Deltabro)
  • KORD (Chicago O’hare International Airport)
  • KPHL (Philadelphia International Airport)
  • KPVD (Providence International Airport) (@Pinecone)
  • KSMF (Sacramento International Airport) (@Asorb)
  • KSAT (San Antonio International Airport)

New Routes To New Airports

At their new airports, Sun Country will be adding the following routes:

  • KMSP-KEWR
  • KMSP-KIAD
  • KMSP-KORD
  • KMSP-KPHL
  • KMSP-KPVD
  • KMSP-KSMF
  • KMSP-KSAT

Notice how they are all from their main base at Minneapolis (KMSP).

New Routes To Existing Airports

In addition to their newly added airports, Sun Country is also adding routes to some of their existing airports. The routes are as follows:

  • KBNA-KPVD
  • KDFW-TKPK
  • KDFW-MKJS
  • KLAS-PANC
  • KLAS-MMSD
  • KLAS-MMPR
  • KLAX-KBNA
  • KMSP-KSTL (they already had a flight from St. Louis to Fort Myers (KRSW))
  • KPDX-KSTL
  • KPDX-KBNA
  • KPDX-KSAT
  • KSFO-PHNL >:(

What do I think of this?

I like how Sun Country is expanding to a new airport including an airport that is only around 2 hours from where I live (KSMF). Sadly though, they did not add KSJC to their routes database as I was hoping KSJC to have a nonstop flight to KMSP not just with Delta Airlines. What I don’t like is how KSFO is getting expanded even more with a new flight to PHNL. :( DANG IT KSFO!!!

What do you think of this?

Too bad they didn’t want KBWI. KIAD is fine though, I’ve always wanted to fly Sun Country and will do so as soon as I get the opportunity. I could also use KSAT to my advantage. But what I love most is that they are creating routes outside MSP. On lots of their new routes I can see strong competition with SWA

#3

Why exactly would they want to target SJC? If loads are better at SFO, no reason they wouldn’t go there…

#4

They went to SMF and their passenger load is not as good as SJC

Also, Minneapolis is a popular domestic destination at San Jose, so it could mean profits for them and competition with Delta, which is good for us, the customers.

But you know how I am with that SFO airport…

#5

Awesome dude! Here is a sun country just for you!

#6

They should come to Manchester (MHT). We lost our only Minneapolis route since Delta cut it back sometime in 2011 when they fully merged with Northwest.

If we have Sun Country Airlines come to MHT, it would be a game changer, as we would have a brand new airline servicing our airport

3 more KLAS Routes for Sun Country. YAAS

#8

Seems like a good move to me. Might be a real contender for some of my trips from the northeast whereas before they weren’t even on my radar.

#9

Coming to KPVD…oh yeah!!!

#10

Makes sense that they’re starting service to MSP from PVD. BDL already has multiple routes there (through Delta), where as PVD doesn’t have any. Looking forward to see how they do!

YES YES YES!!! KSFO - PHNL, That will make for me easier!

I wish it was KSJC - PHNL, I am with you @BigBert10.

Being a Minnesotan this is such exciting news and I’ll be flying them soon on their new Cabin!
