Sun Country 737-900ER
Sun Country Airlines is a Minneapolis-based ultra low cost carrier. They operate over 100 routes across the United States, Mexico, Canada, Central America, and the Caribbean, mainly from their hub in Minneapolis, but also from a variety of other cities, like Milwaukee, Madison, Eau Claire, Duluth, Dallas, and Williston. They have won numerous accolades, including best low cost carrier in North America.
Sun Country is the 11th largest airline in the United States, with a fleet of 43 passenger Boeing 737-800s. They also operate 12 737-800 freighters on behalf of Prime Air, with 8 more on order.
Sun Country is a growing airline. The airline’s president Dave Davis said at Routes Americas 2024 in Bogotá that the carrier is on track for a 75-strong fleet by 2027. Davis said “at some point down the road, the next iteration of the company is probably building out another focus city similar to what Minneapolis is." Davis additionally noted that the airline is interested in flying to South America. They are currently constrained by their fleet. Their longest route is Minneapolis - Aruba, which is about as far as a 737-800 can go.
In 2023, Sun Country announced that they were leasing 5 737-900ERs from Oman Air. This will afford them more capacity on their very high demand routes to places like Fort Myers, Orlando, Los Angeles, Cancun, and Boston. The 737-900ER has marginally more range, but it could be enough to make a route like Minneapolis - MedellĂn or Barranquilla feasible. They could potentially open up a large South American market by adding their second focus city somewhere in the Southern United States, like Texas or Florida.
