As soon as you enter the runway then off when you exit. Also they go off in clouds and low visibility.

How low would the visibility have to be for them to be turned off? Never heard that one before…

It just while in clouds to turn them off so in any visibility like that. It can cause you to become disoriented due to the flashing lights reflecting back to you from the cloud cover. @Freddiefrogs

@MarcelloM the only time you would turn them off while in the air is in clouds or very low visibility as I described earlier.
