Stopping once exiting the runway

Just a statement and I know this has been mentioned so many times!! Can we normalize NOT stopping on the exit taxiway of a runway once you’ve landed?? It actually makes me lose my mind. Even though you technically don’t have clearance to taxi to a terminal, it is still more important to safely exit the runway and keep it moving! Especially at busy fly-ins!

Best practice is to stop just after the hold short line, so that you aren’t considered taxiing without clearance but you are also clear of the runway.

That is an option and better then stopping before, however you would be blocking an exit for the runway

As long as you are past the hold short line you aren’t doing anything wrong unless ATC says otherwise. It also helps pilots figure out where/how they’re going to get to their gate. Personally, it isn’t that big of an issue. Also, unless it’s princess juliana airport, it’s only one of many exits. Also if you stop before the hold short line then you haven’t actually “exited” the runway-you’re still considered “on” it until the entirety of your plane is past the hold short line.

Yes, totally makes sense, it’s just if your blocking an exit it becomes an issue.

Yeah if live been there for more than like 2 minutes it’s an issue

I suggest you keep rolling, slowly, on an established taxi route used by incoming aircraft while requesting taxi - if you don’t know the established flows/routes, just use good judgement.

Your larger, busier commercial airports (Bravos and Charlies) all have established taxi flows/routes and procedures. If you need to stop:

  • Clear the runway safety zone
  • Turn onto a taxiway so you’re not blocking the exit and out of the way - use good judgement.

The worst thing you can do is stop within the runway safety zone (this means any portion of the aircraft in the safety zone) or block an exit.

Yeh I get the panic some might feel about taxiing without permission, but definitely rolling passed the hold short line is a MUST

Never had an issue with ATC when taxiing without clearance once I have exited the runway. Should not stop before OR after the hold short line as that totally disrupts aircraft trying to exit.

Exit completely, contact ground and taxi slowly towards your desired parking whilst waiting for ATC clearance. As @W0X0F mentioned, use common sense and practical judgment

Taking high speed exits present in most hubs can help from being to a complete stop. Would be great if more users take time to plan their exit and the breaking power in advance can help maintain their taxing efficiently.

I plan my rollout to catch a high speed at 40-50kts.

It’s basic speed management - I gradually slow to my target speed of about 60 kts as I near the high speed, continue braking and exit via the high speed at 40-50kts.

You will get a taxi overspeed warning, but have more than sufficient time to get under 35kts.

This is the best, not to mention the fastest way to exit the runway.

I’m an IFATC Officer and have never issued a violation for taxiing (without permission) after exiting a runway. I have reported pilots for coming to a full stop and blocking the runway exit.

Truth be told, taxi without permission is not a report I use with any frequency or regularity. If someone is taxiing without permission, I’ll either warn, “please wait for clearance before taxiing” – or if I know they’re going to the runway, I may just issue the instruction and allow them to continue.

My goal is to communicate and work with pilots in providing quality ATC service.

For widebody might consider around 30-35kts but for narrowbody it’s alright. I do go less than 30kts since a380 has higher curve radius and the only aircraft I actually fly in the sim with 77W.
