Hey fellow aviators, I usually use Simbrief for all my flights and it’s really useful. However there’s one thing I don’t understand and need clarification on it: the Star altitudes are completely different in comparison to the ingame altitudes. The steps between the legs are very steep and often lead to extensive VS and acceleration of the AC. Any ideas on that?
Simbrief does what is called a “continuous descent” based on the cost index, which is technically the most efficient. However in some aircraft (e.g. A320 family) it does (for some reason, probably the average lower cost index) like to do a particularly steep descent, and while on the steep side, it’s not unrealistic. A320s (as well as other aircraft) descend at 3000-4000fpm from cruise all the time. I’ve personally never had issues managing speed on those descents, you’ve just got to do it in stages rather than say trying to go from 300 → 240 in one go.
Infinite Flight by default only has any altitudes present on the STAR procedure chart, and in the event a waypoint has an altitude range, it chooses one at random.
Ok thanks. Are descend rates at VS 3000/4000 not too extreme? I typically use something between 2000-2500 from cruise to mid level between 20.000-10.000ft. There’s also an indicator ingame that shows everything above 2500vs a limit for the AC. (Orange flashing button.)
I understand high VS for small airliner. But for heavy AC it’s hart to maintain speed limits, as they usually do not bleed speed at high VS settings.
It’s pretty common. In fact I was flying the A330-200 yesterday and had to descend at -4500fpm because I missed TOD slightly. Aircraft was able to maintain speed at idle thrust pretty comfortably.
Ok got it. AI confirmed it. For passengers a rate at 2000-3000 is preferred. Why is the button flashing at -2500vs?
It’s just an indication that your descent is veering into the steep area. I don’t use the built-in VNAV system (I use In-Flight Assistant’s VNAV function, which doesn’t have a limit) so I ignore it.
