Getting boarded up at a remote stand in St. Petersburg, Russia’s second largest city
Climbing over the outskirts of the city, heading Southeast
Up at cruise near the town of Molokovo
The scenery is starting to turn a little more arid looking as we track south towards Kazakstan over the Orenburg Oblast
An early dinner of beef and vegetable stew was served over the North Aral Sea (which is not a sea)
The sun is beginning to set over Northern Uzbekistan
Turning base into Termez
A beautifully smooth landing welcomes us to the Southern reaches of Uzbekistan. Situated right on the border with Afghanistan, and not far from Tajikistan, Termez is a unique blends of Buddhist, Zoroastrian, and Islamic influences, with just a little sprinkle of Soviet flair from decades ago. Termez more recently served as a base for Russian military operations in the Soviet–Afghan War, a fact which is reflected in the run down Air Force infrastructure around the airport.
