Welcome to St. Barthélemy, home of one of the trickiest approaches in the world! And what better way to note this airport’s trickiness than with a landing competition!
I’ve got some information here that you will need to take a look at before you sign up to compete.
RULES
- No planes larger than a C208 are allowed as per the active TFR restriction.
- All landings must be on runway 10
- You have a maximum of 3 landing attempts, you may use as many attempts as you like, but no more than three.
- You must comply with ATC and maintain proper separation.
- You must not influence another competitor’s landing attempt.
- Go-arounds and crashes will be counted as attempts, but you will receive zero points for that attempt.
Failure to comply with any of these rules will result in an immediate disqualification and, if necessary, you could be met with a violation.
Scoring Criteria
Judges will score each landing on 4 criteria, with a maximum of 5 points given for each attempt.
- Smoothness (2 points) - Max points are given for a butter landing
- Landing in the proper zone (1 point) - Max points will be given for landing in the proper zone, i.e. right after the runway 10 numbers.
- Alignment (1 point) - Maximum points will be given for staying on the centerline for the entirety of the landing, from touchdown all the way to beginning your turn to back taxi.
- Proximity to the approach hill (1 point) - Get as close as you can to the hill without touching it.
Whoever scores the highest average score across all of their attempts wins the competition!
