Spotting tips thread

Hello all fellow Spotters!

I have made this thread so more experienced spotters (@AndrewWu,@Humanguy, @Anthony_Gulluscio,Etc.) can help out the newer people. Like me.

Tips like “best ISO and Shutter speed”
Or “Best ways to spot with a phone”

The problem with threads like this is advice is literally always “it depends”.

Depends

Depends but just get closer

He’s better at USING a pan than me that’s why he’s so rotund

In June I upgraded to an iPhone 15 pro max. The quality often times is insane. You could get away with saying it’s a professional camera. I used to have an iPhone SE… quality wasn’t that great, but the angles it was taken at made it so much better. It’s not just about the camera, but also the photo. I’m not too experienced with cameras, I just live in a lucky area lol.

He can hear you in Cali my friend.

Statements made by someone who hasn’t used a professional camera I think, phone processors do artifacts in a very obvious way.

He is the cause of Cali’s geological activity we’ve been over this

Oh BTW, bc your in my Area, where is the the best planespotting place for PHL where you spot?

I could give some photography tips in general. I do enjoy editing, and I love making long form videos.

People have asked me what camera I was using and I said it’s just a phone lol. Obviously not to everyone, but a lot of people can’t tell the difference. I always shed a small tear when I see a fancy setup though.

But for technicals and settings for cameras, that’s all you. I literally do everything in post editing.

Ahhhh I’ve never spotted at PHL lol, but I think there’s a nice spot along the south fence where you can get the skyline in the background (I want to say 27R arrivals but I do not know). It’s not marked on SpotterGuide but if you drive the south road by spot 7 and look through the fence I think you’ll see the angle.

Understandable but as someone who used to phone spot, phone editing and camera photo editing are two very different things so it depends on what OP is using.

The last 2 aren’t terrible, just need some color adjustments. The first 2 are just about where you’re taking it from, and that first one.. you shouldn’t even attempt taking a picture from that distance without zooming in on a camera like that lol.

My dad is a former professional photographer. I should get him to spot for me one day

The only real photography I do is for press, mostly political events. Which.. isn’t the same world at all as planes.

That was the max of my phone and the second one is from my porch as it was flying from JFK. It was about at 15-16,000 ft. And that is what I usually spot

If you’re just looking to “plane spot” then you’re doing fine with the last two. The first two shots shouldn’t have even been attempted imo.

Editing tips is a bit harder because everyone has a subjective taste and I can’t really tell you what to do because your style and my style may not mix.
