Does anyone know where the UAE draws the line between legal planespotting and illegal planespotting. Is it inside airport vs outside? Phone vs camera?

You can’t planespot near immigration as you can see planes there , where it shows no photography it means no photography , you can planespot while airside near other gates.

Also make sure that other people are not in your frame , it is offensive to have others in your pictures especially in middle eastern countries.

Will they have an issue if I pull out a large camera lens airside, away from other people? Not trying to get into trouble but there’s some cool things I want to see.

No they won’t, but I recommend you , when you remove your camera make it a bit discrete and make sure you don’t use much flash , that’s all I can say :).

Do you know what terminal el al uses at Dubai? That would be a great picture next time you go spotting!

Is there any designated spotting location or permit for high-quality aviation photography?

As per my knowledge there isn’t any designated planespotting area , though on a few particular roads which are behind runways you can get nice shots of plans :).

El Al uses Terminal 1 from Dubai.
