Spotting advice

tomorrow i’ll be spotting (in real life) at fort lauderdale (KFLL).

if theres anyone here that has spotted at FLL before, where is the best and closest spot for unrestricted observation?

with regards to flightradar24, i thought i could’ve seen the rwys in use on the metar but im currently not seeing it. how do you see the rwys in use on FR24? if thats even possible.

Your best option is the “Ron Gardner Aircraft Viewing Area”

okay thanks and any help with FR24?

I don’t know anything about that

switching to miami guys, so is it possible to get advice for there instead? and if theres a website that shows atis/rwys in use for airports

El Dorado furniture is your spot, it provides great views of arrivals/departures into/from runway 09 and its the common MIA spotting point just beware that the railroad tracks are active

If you want RWY 8R, L and 12 viewing points there is 25th street I’ve never spotted here so I’m not 100% sure if this area is public but it might be

It’s been normal ops recently so it should be like that tomorrow as well

thank you very much, very helpful and thank you @Butter575

You won’t be able to see runway in use in the metar, that’s not meant for it. But just by looking at the tracker, it’s easy to see which runways are in use. Just know your spots for each wind condition and you’re good. So if they change runways you know where to go

I highly recommend looking at Spotters Guide linked below! This should help you :)

It explains in detail their typical runway usage, places to spot etc…

Just look at flightradar and see where the planes are. In my experience stuff from the south will use 9/27 and stuff from the north will use 8/26 and 12/30. Generally when 8/9 are in use it will be departures on 8R and 9 and arrivals on 12 and some on 8R, but some traffic from the south will arrive 9 as well (this can change though). When the other side is in use it will be 26L/27 departures and 26L/30 arrivals I believe.

Sometimes this rule is broken (I believe the A380s and 747s like to land/depart south, maybe it’s a size thing).

MIA spotterguide here: Miami Intl. Airport - Spotting Guide - spotterguide.net

Here are some sample shots from Spot 7 (El Dorado)

It’s my favorite spot at the airport but it’s not great during summer since the sun is already very high by the time it reaches the south of the airport. You’ll probably want to use 4, 5, 6 or 15.

This is mainly cargo flights and middle eastern airlines, usually smaller A320s from even all the way in concourse J will still use 8R

Is it? When I was there it was pretty much everything from the South (cargo or not) and looking at today’s arrivals it seems like it’s the same - even for AA North Terminal operations.

I was talking about departures, arrivals still use RWY 9
