Southwest very recently announced one of its shortest-ever routes, connecting Baltimore, Maryland with Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. From downtown-to-downtown, the cities are 90 miles apart. You can drive it in under two hours or take the Amtrak Acela in just over an hour. Needless to say, very few people on these flights, which start next March, will be trying to get between the two cities as their origin and destination. Instead, it’s designed to capture Southwest flyers in the Philadelphia region who have very limited options out of PHL. Baltimore is only a quick hop away with 78 possible connecting cities. Whatever the reason, it’s a very interesting route! The block time is one hour. Southwest’s current shortest flight, Denver to Colorado Springs, has a block time of 45 minutes. So while it’s not the absolute shortest, it definitely is up there!
