Smoother landings for ILS

How do i make my landings as smooth as possible with ILS? I seem to have trouble with the plane landing softly. Am I going to slow or too fast?

What speed are you landing at?

130-135 for like 777, 757, 737

I’d try going a bit faster. The 757 typically lands at around 145 knots, the 777 lands at around 145 knots, and the 737 at 140. Hope this helps!

Thats what this thing says, so…

Nice. Now open the manual and show us the page where it states it’s “usual” landing speed.

This manual is for both the 757 and 767. I found the page I was looking at, and its the one for the 767. I’ll keep looking for the 757.

It is very hard to have a smooth landing using the APPR (I assume your usage of the word ILS refers to an APPR approach) as it’s only goal is to get you to one point which is located somewhere in between the runway’s 1.000ft marker (the large white rectangles).

Slamming on the runway is most probably a speed issue, more precisely your speed is too low. 130 to 135 kts seems adequate for a landing for the 757-200 and 737s (777 would like a tiny bit more ± 5 kts additional).

But mass plays a crucial role in your final approach speed, a light 757-200 can easily land at 120 kts. Same goes for all aircraft.

In the past I have managed to make butter landing while using APPR. What I did is fly a normal APPR approach, 130/135 kts seems perfectly reasonable (considering your mass allows it) and at around 50 to 30 ft above the ground (GPWS are a great indicator) you cut the throttle back to idle. This will force the plane to pitch slightly up and the momentum will smoothen your approach path.

At 130 kts your airplane will not gain altitude, but will most certainly pitch up and allow the gears to take less weight at once, and making your touchdown gradual, aka a butter landing.

TL:DR
Cut the throttle at 40ft.

Please let me know if you succeeded !

I would suggest using ILS to first line up with the runway, and once you’re on short final you disable ILS and fly it by hand down to the runway. That way, you can ensure being lined up and ensure getting a good landing.

In IF Atleast 145 is too fast for the B777 imo, about 138 works best at about 25% load.😉
