SID/STAR Knowledge

Hey, does the majority of the community in general not know how SID/STARs work? Or how to fly them properly? I ask because I noticed many people, especially out of LAX are not flying the SIDs/STARs correctly. And as someone who wants to be a dispatcher, it kinda irks me. Maybe someone can shed some light onto why some folks don’t want to learn how these procedures work properly.

A lot of people don’t bother with flying things like the procedures correctly - they just want to get from point A to point B with minimal effort. It’s probably a minority of us that look at things like charts, etc.

Frustrating yes, but it is what it is.

A handful of people also don’t know how to learn the procedures.

To answer your question, I don’t think it’s the majority of the community—at least as far as Expert server goes. When I control I usually check flight plans and look specifically for their procedures. I also look at people’s flight plans when I’m flying. I’d say a majority have a procedure in their flight plan.

Edit: to add—the one thing majority of people get wrong are speed restrictions/targets. That would require access to charts (free or paid).

Definitely. When I do flight plans, i check the speed cstr of the SID’s and STAR’s
To be honest, it allows me to have a smooth left and right turns and the LNAV not overshooting the lines or curves of the SID/STARs

I just follow the IRL aircraft with hidden procedures.. And a shortcut here and there..
Always fun to fly a 1 on 1 route except that ATC gets confused once in a while..

I use flight radar 24 to make an estimate and fox charts do have procedures for alt restrictions and sometimes speed rest for some major airports I believe. But from what I have seen many of them get way too high during departures hence frustrating and chance of collisions thanks to ground speed effect. That also makes me wonder sometimes if they know their aircraft or not.

So I always fly from FR24.
If I arrive close to my destination, does the approach want me to use a STAR? Then I quickly change that.
The same applies to a SID, but that rarely happens. For years, no departure controller has given instructions to go higher or lower or to set speeds; only check-in, then radar contact, and bye-bye. And yes, even before takeoff, I always check the speed and such in the charts.
The only thing that annoys me are some users who don’t have an account (newbies) who know what they’re doing and just throw in whatever suits them, as if they were the kings of the skies.

Oooh the IRL aircraft get vectors, like in your fpl it looks like a direct to LOZIT from MRRLO. And yeah sometimes shortcuts are reasonable lol. When I do shortcuts I like to imagine I’m also being vectored when there’s no ATC haha.

Me as well!

What says they have to fly a SID? We don’t even have clearance delivery. I can file whatever flight plan I please, and fly that flight plan how I want in uncontrolled airspace. If I really want to, I can fly a diverse departure, or depart VFR and join an IFR route.

The only time I have to fly a SID is when a controller clears me to and I accept the clearance.

My whole device is full of customized flight plans. As long as traffic and ATC allows me to fly like this, I’m happy to do so as it adds more realism to the game.
Plus, thanks to the custom flight plans, I have missing SID’s, STAR’s and approaches saved like the ‘Quiet Bridge Visual’ at SFO and the 28R approach suited for parallel landings which you can see in the last picture. ATC will most likely vector you in straight while they actually approach the runway outside the red cone and line up at around 400ft.

I haven’t touched Simbrief for almost 2 years now thanks to this haha

I always preplan to make it as realistic as possible, I’m happy I’m not the only one haha.

Yeah I always thought I was the only one as well..
I use KML files from Flightaware and convert them at Infinite Planner - Flight Plan Converter for Infinite Flight
I used to add to every singe heading change by hand which took me a long time but thanks to this feature it takes just a few seconds

You mean people don´t follow the turns or not follow the speed and altitude restrictions? I tend to do that, I limit myself to the basics, less than 250kts below 10000ft, then I accelerated to cruise speed. About the turns, I try to fly manually until I pass the first turn in my FPL, then I engage autopilot.

All three, turns, speed, and altitude lol especially off of LAX. For some reason users always turn right if they are on the ORCKA5 and if they did that irl they would crash into arrivals on the IRNMN2 STAR.

Here’s the thing, at least for Canadian Airspace. SID/STAR’s are not always accurate and to get the most accurate information, you’re having to pay upwards of $20 every 56 days. While you can get out of date information for free, if you dig hard enough, it’s hard to find.

I do appreciate those that use SID/STARs appropriately, but what gets me more is incorrect use of runways.

Whenever VNAV for ascending is added, I´m sure we´ll be able to implement altitudes to follow on the flightplan section. Maybe even speeds. As for turns, pilot discretion is adviced. Luckily I only fly on single player, so I haven´t had any complains.
