I decided to do a trip report inspired by YouTuber Noel Phillips, which was inspired by @ThatOneFloridaAvGeek ’s trip report based on YouTuber Jeb Brooks.
Enjoy!
Introduction: “Good morning from Cairo International Airport. I’ve been in Africa for the last couple of weeks, flying around on different carriers. I got in from Dakar on Air Senegal’s Airbus A330neo early this morning, and am about to leave the beautiful African continent with a European low cost, long haul carrier, Edelweiss.”
“Alright then, all checked in and through security, gotta grab myself a cup of coffee before my flight. Edelweiss doesn’t have a lounge here in Cairo, but being a low cost airline, that doesn’t surprise me.”
“We boarded just a few minutes late, at a remote stand on the far end of the airport. Our ride today up to Zurich was an Airbus A330-300 registered as HB-JHR. The aircraft was delivered brand new to Edelweiss in 2016.”
“We took off from runway 23R at Cairo. This heavy plane took up almost the entire length of the runway. Our route took us northwest out of Cairo, up into the Nile Delta, then west along the North African coast of Libya, Tunisia, and Algeria, before turning strait north over the Mediterranean Sea, Italy, and finally into Zurich, cruising at 32 and 34,000 feet. The flight time was 3 hours, 45 minutes.”
“The seats were plenty comfortable for this short of a flight. Edelweiss does do much longer flights on the A330s, like Zurich to Costa Rica, so I’m not sure how it would feel for about 11 hours. We did have personal seatback screens with movies, TV shows, and even audiobooks, but the options were pretty limited. I was quite pleased with the tail camera.”
“I got a message after we landed from a fan who spotted my plane over the Egyptian coast from a Turkish Airlines flight to Casablanca.”
“I was doing this flight today with Rachel, who was seated on the other side of the aircraft. She didn’t get much of a view of the coast, just the vast expanse of the Sahara Desert.”
Just off the Sicilian Coast, lunch was served. I had the “Edelweiss Box,” which is basically ham and potatoes. The potatoes were quite dry, but the ham was pretty good.
Its time for the Noel Phillips Loo Review
“Alright everybody, this is the Edelweiss Airbus A330 economy bathroom. Pretty standard restroom, not too big. They do have some nice Edelweiss branded soap and hand lotion, but again, pretty generic.”
“We began our approach over the Italy/Swiss border. The turbulence got quite bad, but the mountains were beautiful.”
Tail cam shot!
“After a pretty convoluted approach path, involving overflying the airport, then looping around to land, we buttered onto runway 16. With some heavy braking, we were able to make the first runway exit.”
“I posted my flight information on Instagram, and a local spotter and fan of the channel came and took a picture of the butter machine in action.”
“All in all, I’d say my experience with Edelweiss was pretty nice. I paid £ 584 pounds, which is surprisingly expensive for an airline that brands themself as a low cost holiday carrier.”
