Shooting the gap

anywhere it talks about shooting the gap in the ATC manual as I would like to read up on it before my training session tomorrow

What is shooting the gap?

Shooting the gap is sending a departure in between tight arrivals. Common practice at airports like SFO where the runways intersect and there is a steady stream of both departures and arrivals

I don’t see it covered anywhere in the Manual.

It’s a technique used with intersecting runways to make sure that you can use both runways. The ideal procedure for intersecting runways is to use one runway for departures and one runway for arrivals but we train so that you can understand how to use both runways, called “shooting the gap” where you’ll have most aircraft on one runway and then one on the other runway and you’ll have to let that one aircraft land without conflicting with other aircraft.

Cameron did a good job of explaining it simply.

Don’t worry, I know it can sound confusing, but I’ll be sure to explain it before our training 😉
