Feedback from OK-WAXY

Thanks for controlling today! I have a few remarks about your service

Transitions: transition altitude is the Airport Elevation (AAL) + 2,500ft, rounded to the nearest 500ft increment. In this case, KEWR’s airfield elevation is 17ft, so if we plug that into the equation, 17 + 2500 = 2,517ft, rounded to the nearest 500ft increment, so the correct transition altitude should be 3,000ft. I don’t know how you arrived at 9,500ft, but it’s all good, you’re still learning

Pattern entry: good job on the first pattern entry! From the transition, it can be a little confusing, but you nailed it!

Runway change: when I requested a runway change, you immediately cleared me for T&Gs on Runway 22L. However, it’s important to remember that you need to issue a pattern entry command (in this case, you should have issued the command “Enter right downwind Runway 22L”) before doing so. Good job issuing the different traffic pattern on the command, though!

Change in landing conditions: in all fairness, I sent the wrong message when I said “Inbound on the Visual Runway 22L”. That was a mistake, and I apologize for that, as I’m sure it could’ve been confusing for you. What I had meant to do was send the message of “OK-WAXY is on left downwind Runway 22L, full stop” (which I did eventually send). However, when I mistakenly sent that other message, you sent two things that you should avoid sending in the future: one, you issued a pattern entry again for me, but there was no need, as you had already instructed me to do left traffic from 22L; two, when you cleared me for the option that time, you issued a pattern direction again. Since you were under the assumption that I was going to be remaining in the pattern (I hadn’t given you any indications otherwise), you were right to have cleared me for the option, but once I’m already established in a traffic pattern, you don’t need to send duplicate direction instructions. Again, I do apologize for the faulty message.

Exit runway: I wasn’t sure if you were going to send this command, but you eventually did. When we send this command, we try to do so when the aircraft is at roughly 80kts, and you sent it when I was at half of that. Additionally, to promote efficiency and reduce the amount of redundant work you create for yourself, since the airport wasn’t busy and you were both the G and T controllers, you could’ve just directly issued the command “When able turn right, cross Runway 22R and contact Ground on the taxiway.” What you did wasn’t technically wrong, but it’d be helpful to practice otherwise.

Thank you for the service, and maybe I’ll catch you again some other time!

Hi Waxyscorpion308,

Good flying! That was some nice butter you put on the runways! I appreciate you and everyone else coming out today. Your feedback is crucial as it helps me to hone in on what I need to improve. So THANK YOU THANK YOU! It’s especially helpful when I can get IFATC and expert server pilots on to help.

Im reviewing your feedback, applying it, and making the changes. I look forward to seeing you at my practical exam in the near future! I can’t thank you (and everyone else) enough for taking the time today!

Have a great day!

[CLOSED]

IFATC written exam passed. we are back open with a need for rigorous practice. I’ve got my coffee, bring it on!

Any IFATC Officer candidates please feel free to open. Definitely want the experience of working with radar.

Just FYI, IFATC are not allowed to open on the TS, so this wont be possible.

I was G-RAND!

Sorry I only stayed for 1 pattern, the people ahead of me were doing full cone pattern . I didn’t have any issues on tower, the sequence and clearance were good. The exit runway was perfect!
The only thing was on the drag and taxi route, if you remove the hold short, it will give contact tower instead!

Thanks for the service!
