Shadows still not improved on iPad

Version Information

26.1 (15851)

Device Information

iPad Air 2024 6th Generation (M2), iPadOS 26.2

Description

Shadows still look muffled once you pull the camera away from the aircraft. It was mentioned on the new Beta update that this was improved but I still get the effect on iPad. I would expect on a powerful device like this to get crisp shadows. They blur out with the slightest movement

You wouldn’t call this an improvement? Ouch.

Here’s a before and after. I think the improvement is super good!

Obviously it isn’t crisp shadows all the way out, but it’s definitely getting a smoother edge.

Sorry my comment might came across harsh. It definitely is an improvement!! I was just hoping it would be more crisp! :crossed_fingers:

Unfortunately this is a limitation of the shadow technique we are using.

Most games have the same issue unless they use full raytraced shadows or much more advanced techniques that would be too costly on mobile devices.

It’s possible that we can improve this a bit further but I am personally pretty happy with the result at this point.

I appreciate the explanation! I understand there are challenges we’re not aware of! Either way thank you for the improvements that you’ve made so far :raising_hands:t2:

The shadows look astonishing:star_struck::star_struck::star_struck:

Hey Philippe, is it possible with these shadows to maintain higher quality shadows the further out we zoom? Specifically just for smaller aircraft. I was flying the C172 earlier and as you zoom out, I feel as though the shadows get too jagged too quickly.

I totally understand if this is not going to change though, for the reasons you gave above.

Looks like you answered your own question, and you are correct.

Shadows are totally fine now imo. Hopefully performance improves until release.

So these are the shadows we’re getting in 26.1?

Yeap, sounds like it!

Yep! And they are pretty darn good for a mobile system built from the ground up! I’ve gotta say that for the most part, they are super smooth on my end!
