SFO-CDG Trip Report in Economy (On a 23 year old 777)

Hi there! About a week ago I flew from San Francisco to Paris Charles-De-Gaulle via UA990. I was onboard N223UA, a United 777-222(ER) equipped with the legendary Pratt and Whitney PW4090s. I was super excited to fly on a plane with these engines, and they did NOT disappoint. Let’s get started with the report.

Here’s N223UA. This 777 is wearing my favorite United livery, Continental with the fully blue cowlings.

We then pushed back, started our engines, and headed to RW28L via taxiways A, B, F if I remember correctly.

Before we took off and we were in line, the engines went idle and I heard the “whale” sound that is so unique to PW engines. We lined up, took off, and reached our initial cruising alt (we soon step climbed.)

United has a very diverse selection of IFE, so I was entertained for the whole flight.

This flight did not feel that long, clocking in at around 10 hrs 7 mins. The lights went out shortly after takeoff at 3 pm.

A picture of the quiet cabin. Anyways, soon we landed in CDG (great landing) and we deboarded. I immediately remembered to ask for a peek in the cockpit, and FA told the pilot and he let me in. As this was my first time being in an airliner cockpit, it was amazing, and it felt like nerd paradise. I got to sit in the captain’s seat, and told the pilot I play flight simulator ;) I got some pictures, and here is a neat one:

All in all, the flight was very enjoyable with a very friendly crew. Thanks for reading!

I love that sound. I’ve seen it on videos but I’m yet to actually hear one. PW4090 is one of my favourite engines.

Nice trip report, enjoy Paris.

Thanks! I always heard the PWs on the United 777-200s that flew into SFO when they would fly over my house, but it was a totally different experience on the plane.
