One of my favorite things in this world is to take random day trips to places! Back in March
I took a day to Seattle to see the Boeing museum and eat Thai food
, and in late April I went to visit the old Stapelton ATC tower with some friends
! Yesterday after my shift was done at JAC, I snuck on a Delta flight to Salt Lake City, and from there went to Butte! I am writing this whilst back home in Jackson
, after a quick trip exploring the small mountain community this morning and afternoon! I started the morning with breakfast at The Copper Plate
, a Butte delacasy, and from there explored down town for a while, which included buying a new pair of orange and blue dunks since my old pair from Guam
have gone to
. Afterwards I went on a hike
near the airport!! I hope you enjoy this quick trip, and be on the look out for more in the future
!!

After work, I snagged the last seat on DL3693 from Jackson
; flying standby cant be so stressful sometimes. The flight down to SLC was only about 35 mins so there was no snack service
which was fine by me as I got some much needed sleep after being awake since 3:45
. Someone from the next crew that was taking this A319 to Milwaukee took a picture
of our flight as it pulled into the gate in Salt Lake City and was so nice to share the picture with me!!
I had about 3 hours to kill in Salt Lake before boarding started for my flight to Butte, which was no issue as the new SLC is easily my favorite airport
!! I decided it was only right to visit Market Street Grill for Dinner
since it’s a Salt Lake staple! I got Halibut tacos
and a Cesar salad
, and decided to skip desert because you know… Biscoff
!! After dinner, I wandered over to B concourse to see Allly - an Allosaurus fragilis skeleton given to the airport from the University of Utah
; and of course I had to get here via the new “River Tunnel” as its afffectionately named! Before heading to A2, I had to stop at the lego store and blow $400 on the lego Titanic set
!!
Here is the lovely E175LR that’ll take us to Montana tonight
- N258SY. This 2017 built EJet has spent its entire operational life with SkyWest. On this particular day, our aircraft had flown in from Lewiston ID as DL3578. Soon after the aircraft arrived, boarding started and we were well on our way to Butte!
!
Being the nerd that I am
, I asked the pilots of I could take a look around the cockpit when I boarded, and because it was completed 20 minutes early, they let me hang out and actually let me request the clearance from the Ramp Tower
!! Everything from my Intro to ATC class at school was coming back to me and they were astounded that I knew C-R-A-F-T!! Although the aircraft we were on can hold 70 people, there were only 15 of us - due to this, the F/A’s came around and offered everyone a pre-departure beverage
; I did the correct thing and got a Ginger Ale
! We pushed back, had a quick taxi to 34L, and were off the ground after only a 30 second T/O roll
. We climbed like a freaking
We reaching our cruising altitude of FL300 just about 12 minutes after takeoff as we passed Bear Lake
, and soon after the F/A’s came around with snacks and drinks! Given it’s Delta, the only correct thing to do was order 10 Biscoff
and another Ginger Ale
, which is what I did
After the snack service I fell asleep for about 20 minutes
and woke up to this cheeky view of Driggs, The Tetons
, and my amazing home town popping up behind them! Then fell right back asleep until we started our descent.
The approach into Butte was very very turbulent due to the Mountains
. Within a few minutes of passing Rexburg, the seatbelt sign was turned on, and stayed on until we got to the gate. The approach into Butte is very interesting, and requires a double base and double downwind. The airport only has a few RNAV approaches, and no ILS system.
One of my friends who is attending flight school at KDIJ was on a cross country solo, and just so happended to snag this photo of my flight battling a 12 knot crosswind on landing
. Although there was a crosswind, our pilots buttered
! It was a very quick taxi to gate 1 from there, and we soon disembarked.
By choice, I decided to get off last so to get this perfect picture without any passengers accidently photobombing.
The terminal in Butte is very small, and has very limited amenities but it made disembarkment very simple. From here I got an uberto my hotel
, and fell alseep almost instantly. The uber happened to be a pilot for Delta and said he was the Captain on Deltas’ first Seoul flight last week
, and shared a bunch of photos with me!!
