Runway Heading colour

I’ve been meaning to ask.
The Runway heading markers sometimes changes colour from Green to Orange to red, what does this mean/ what do they indicate?

The favorability for winds on arrival, if I’m not mistaken.

Sorry, if you already know, but typically you want to be landing with as much of a headwind as possible. So, say you’re landing on hypothetical runway 18. Winds are 360 at 10, 18 should be illuminated green and 36 would be red.

You can adjust the wind direction in the solo to explore the change.

Hello!

  • Green indicates a headwind component.
  • Red indicates a tailwind component
  • And orange indicates there’s a crosswind component.

As pilots, we would always want to land on the green side, although it’s not always possible mostly because there’s a crosswind. Some airports have special procedures that’ll make you land with a crosswind component, so you’ll have to be careful when landing since speeds will be higher on touchdown.

Just for you to know, Red doesn’t indicate headwind, but a tailwind. For the green colour, it’s called headwind. Just writing this so we can prevent any confusion to everybody
