Rex Saab 340 Engine Failure

An engine overheated on a Rex Regional Express Saab 340 while it took off from Dubbo Airport today. The right engine was switched off after large ‘bangs’ were heard as the airplane shook and flames were seen coming from the engine. The aircraft made an emergency landing back in Dubbo. This is the third Rex incident this week, after a Saab lost a propellor and another flight lost cabin pressure. Rex’s Saab 340B fleet has been grounded until the engines are replaced. A Rex media release has stated the engine failure could have been the result of bird ingestion. The incidents are now under investigation by the ATSB.

Things aren’t looking great for Rex are they :/

There’s something wrong with their Saab 340B fleet.

It isn’t exactly the best aircraft for a small airline. Are they low-cost?

No, they’re just competing with QantasLink.

Wow! I’m truly surprised they took no action after 2 incidents and waited for a third one… If I were in-charge I would’ve grounded the Saab fleet until the whole plane was checked and engines replaced immediately…

They were completing checks across the fleet, but the fleet is completely grounded after this third incident.

Voila! There’s what should’ve been completed after the second incident, in order to avoid a successive third one.
I’m not criticizing the airline in any manner…

Yeah, they’ve got a big fleet so they would have been doing they checks gradually. They wouldn’t want to ground the whole fleet at once because loss of air pressure is pretty common.

Hmm… I saw that coming!

A couple of days ago another REX Saab 340 Lost its engine while on decent into Sydney Airport. The propeller landed in bushland near my house! Very lucky that it didn’t kill anyone.
