When requesting runway change during patter work, do I request after taking off instantly when I’m at runway heading or do left / right traffic as instructed then I make my request?

Ideally you request on upwind and don’t turn on crosswind before the controller tells you what to do so the controller can put you on a right instead of left downwind to accommodate other traffic for example.
You can also request a runway change during other phases of the flight though but generally upwind is preferred because the controller has the most time to react to it the .

You can request a runway change at almost any time. If ATC cannot accommodate you they will let you know. I would not recommend asking for one during critical phases of flight though.
