Not to start a debate (seriously), both the Gulf of America and the Gulf of Mexico are acceptable. The Gulf of America naming is only recognized and applied in the US federal government (so for example NOAA and the FAA). Companies like Google Maps and Apple Maps have decided voluntarily to change the name on their services; it’s not a legal requirement. However, some states and the international community (including supernational organizations like the UN and ICAO) still use the Gulf of Mexico.
