Authentic flap sounds during takeoff and landing
Realistic landing gear extension and retraction sounds
Wheel/tyre whine while accelerating on the runway and when the aircraft is slowing down on the runway.
The 380 currently uses a sound pack, but it doesn’t play the appropriate sounds for different phases of flight. The engine sounds are from the 777 sound pack from when the 777 was reworked. It also uses the standard flap sounds and standard gear retraction and extension sounds. There are no tire or wheel sounds during takeoff or landing.
So, IMO, adding a dedicated sound pack for the 380 wouldn’t have any noticeable effect on performance. It would probably only increase the Infinite Flight app’s size by a tiny amount.
To be honest, an interactive cockpit like the one we have on the A320neo is really only usable on tablets. For me, an interactive cockpit is a cool feature, but it’s not very practical on a small screen. That said, I’d still like to have an interactive cockpit, as long as it’s designed with smaller displays in mind.
Just adding to the request for better A380 sounds. Two things I’ve noticed that would make a big difference.
First, the hydraulic pump whine. When you start all four engines at once (1234) or shut them all down together, there’s a short high-pitched whine that lasts maybe 2-3 seconds. It’s not a continuous sound and it doesn’t happen with normal paired starts. People often mistake it for a beep, but it’s the hydraulic pump pressurizing the system during those transitions. Would be great to have that in the sim.
Second, the speedbrake rumble. The A380 has 16 spoilers, eight per wing. When they deploy, they disrupt the airflow over the wing and create turbulent vortices behind the panels. That makes the wing structure and spoilers vibrate, which you hear and feel as a deep low-frequency rumble. It’s purely aerodynamic, not mechanical or hydraulic. Airbus actually found during development that the spoiler wake caused significant buffeting on the horizontal stabilizer at certain deflections. That’s the same thing you feel as the rumble.
The rumble scales with airspeed and how much spoiler you use, so it’s strongest at high speed with full speedbrake and fades as you slow down. In my experience it can be really intense on the A380, more than a 77W, because the wing is huge and the cabin is so quiet that you actually feel the buffet instead of it being drowned out by engine noise. Please don’t make it too subtle.
The A380 is known for being quiet, so these little sounds matter a lot. Thanks.
Hey, thanks for supporting this feature! The facts you shared here are really fascinating. I didn’t know about the spoiler and hydraulic pump whine, either. It would be really cool to have this sound effect in the simulator. Thank you so much!
