Hi,

So it means how you are going to enter the traffic pattern relevant to the runway you are intending to land on.

So in the example below, if you are approaching the airport from the North (top of image) you would join the downwind and make left turn to final approach (left traffic)

If you were approaching from the West (left of image) you would join the final approach without making any turns (straight in)

If you were approaching from the south (bottom of image) you would join and make right turns to the final approach (right traffic)

So I need to say “straight on” if I’m approaching at the runway without a pattern bat only with a direct approach?

Correct yes 👍🏻

It’s essentially like pattern work or a go-around in a way. Let’s say that Runway 14 (one side) has bad weather conditions, while Runway 20 (other side) (obviously random numbers) is open, and you want to land at Runway 20. However, you’re heading towards Runway 14. So, you can go to left/right traffic of Runway 20 to land. You still fly far enough so that you can turn around and intercept the Localizer.
This may be wrong or may not make any sense but that’s the best explanation that I could think of.

Easiest basic way to remember,

  • The runway is on my left, I need to make Left turns to land = Left Traffic
  • The runway is on my right, I need to make Right turns to land on runway = Right Traffic
  • The runway is straight ahead of me, I don’t need to make turns = Straight In
