Please, especially on a featured route at a hub airport, please know how to vacate a runway. I will say, again, sometimes we and I do not have time to go around—saying because if someone was on a short final this would have created a domino effect of aircraft going around, contacting approach, getting sequenced back in, rejecting takeoff, etc. Thank you.
Aircraft not vacating a runway correctly versus an aircraft vacating a runway with situational awareness leaving space for another A380 [insert another large aircraft here] behind them.
Expert Server,
a. KLAX to KSFO (DAL A339)
b. UUEE to OMDB (AIB A388)
Ngl that’s usually me in the video either when I have a case of gethereitis or being told to expedite vacating the runway.
What usually happened was me braking so hard while doing other things, i.e responding to ground, retracting my flaps, spoilers, switching on APU and switching off my HUD leaving the map on that the brake became unresponsive and stuck there juuust brief enough to get groundspeed to 0 right at that bend… all while aiming to vacate at the first exit to look “good”.
What I since learn is to relax, let the plane roll a bit further and vacate at the correct exit based on landing stop by landing weight as pre-calculated in Simbrief’s Landing Calculator, knowing which way to take towards parking even before taking off from departure airport! This eliminates any IF’s single pilot landing’s hectic mishaps and awkward movements… and the way to achieve this is thru pre-flight planning for landing and parking.
I saw the whole pre-flight planning stage for this purpose (where to vacate and turn towards parking) by this seasoned A380 Captain on youtube and had gotten mesmerized!
In fact, since every aircraft has their own predictable exit turns based on their respective landing weights, I now include proper exit waypoints all the way to the correct gate built into my fpl for my regular routine flights, i.e. A380 exit scenarios from all possible runways onto Bay 24 and 25 at Sydney Kingsforth, for example. The main point is knowing exactly when and where to vacate based on your ride to avoid this silly awkward and hectic vacating moments.
To add to this, please make sure to cross the hold short line when exiting. Do NOT stop on the side of the runway. Pictures below is an example of someone stopped on the wrong side.
