I always love flying visual or VFR, enjoying the scenery.
Visual approach is an IFR procedure.
I know, either Visual or VFR.
Visual or GPS.
Often I use GPS till about the last 1,000 or so feet (height based on AGL alt)
Definitely has to be ILS for me, less pilot work ![]()
Radar vectors isn’t really an approach type (they’re ATC directions for heading and altitude to set you up on an approach rather than using an initial approach fix) but ILS is definitely pretty goated irl and IF. It’s the only truly precision approach and has stood the test of time (it goes back way farther than you think)
You forgot one more choice and its my favorite. YOU HAVE THE RUNWAY FOR YOURSELF lol with no ATC its like survival of the fittest if one or more flights are arriving the same time as you. Either approach is slow in front of you or they are practically tailgating when you have someone behind lol
I would have to say visual for me. Mainly so I can (hopefully) land faster hehe
ILS can be so boring sometimes
Agreed, but in IF, RV is considered an approach type. And yes, ILS is nice when pilots know how to fly it ![]()
For a destination airport, I always select an ILS if there is one. If not, GPS.
But on final, for the case of ILS facility, I hand fly using visual reference, if available, but as part of the scan of outside visual reference. If GPS, and also if visual reference is available, I scan between instruments and outside.
Obviously if insufficient visibility, it’s all instruments until runway in sight.
If really low visibility, APPR all the way, or at least until visual contact with the runway.
I just like to hand fly the last part wherever possible.
As far as the navigation to get there, whatever is the most efficient given what’s available.
RV is a way to setup where either an ILS or RNAV approach begins.
Visual backed by the ILS (so tuning into the ILS frequency for another reference) is a fun combination.
you here
Btw, I like GPS; no need to give any instructions.
When traffic is light, GPS all day! However, with heavy traffic, ILS allows us to keep marvelously consistent spacing. As a pilot, though, I’ll generally ask for a visual approach when it’s not too busy.
So I like all three of the IFR approaches! Then again, a good RV can be awesome too in certain circumstances.
