Please Expedite Command

Hi y’all. Today I was approach for JFK and I was vectoring a heavy in for an ILS. I told him to turn to a heading, and he didn’t turn. I then used the please expedite command; there was another plane tracking toward him and he would’ve missed his turn to establish on the localizer. Was I right to use this command in this case? When is it inappropriate to ask a plane to expedite?

Thanks,
Matt

Did he read back your command for the heading instruction?

Yes, he read back, and still never made his turn. After I told him to expedite he made his turn. I should’ve mentioned this in the main post.

If that is the case, then I think it was a good decision because as you said there was a sense of urgency in the turn.

At this stage if the heavy has overshot the intercept then don’t struggle to get them back on, drag and drop the missed approach command and send them around again, hopefully they get it right second time around! 👍

I will next time! Thank you!

In general if you want the pilot to do something quicker then use the command. It’s pretty universal.

You should tell a pilot to expedite, when it’s necessary that he hurries up. That could for example be on a runway exit, or when the pilot is doing a super short take off. Basically anything where the pilot is doing something slow and needs to hurry up and get his a$$ moving.

Please follow instructions would be more appropriate in this situation - you told him to turn, he is not turning - that’s not following instructions.

Ok, I see where you are coming from. But if I told him to expedite his turn he would make it quicker. So next time, I’ll say please follow instructions, then please expedite. Awesome! Thank you!
