people flying out of the region

So i had a question… how are people flying out of the region?? For example I saw about 5 Airbus a320s all flying in straight line in Southern California and heading up towards what would be San Fran region and it was just all black for me. If someone could tell me if you can actually do this or if they are just leaving the region… Thanks!!
