Is Applying a bit of Parking break to quickly reduce speed practical in real world aviation??
I do it alot in the sim, but for realism sake I’m compelled to ask.
Not really cause it wears and destroys the brakes. In real world aviation, full reverse is used or heavy manual braking. But since its a sim do whatever you feel like doing
(experts please correct if i’m wrong)
Try Sliding down on the rudder to apply brakes in a more realistic way.
Reverse thrust is sufficient to slow the aircraft down, along with your spoilers extended. Below 60 knots, you can apply manual braking by sliding the rudder button down. (If you like some realism touch too it)
As others have said, manual braking and reverse thrust is sufficient. In the real world, you would never use the parking brake on landing. That’s how you end up with a blown tire.
For a little realism, you should plan your exit well in advance, like even as far as before departure. And just before TOD and checking ATIS, verify runway in use and plan your exit again.
IRL some airports have preferred exits, and some times airports have exits that are prohibited from being used (despite being an exit)—usually exits just after the touchdown zone.
Regardless, knowing your exit can actually determine how hard your braking should be. With that said, using parking brakes will often yield a much more shorter “stopping” distance, and sometimes you may end up too far away from an ideal exit, or worse before an intersecting runway.
This is good advice. I’ve seen too many times where people do extreme braking, only to ‘cruise’ at a speed of 25-30 kts to the next runway exit. Causes headaches for ATC and people on final.
Parking brake is never used in normal operation for deceleration purposes, only when the aircraft is stopped. But in case of normal or alternate braking modes are not operative, then the parking brake may be used to stop the aircraft taking into account that it should be used only at low speeds after landing to prevent tire burst.
You will wear off your wheels so I don’t do it
If I can’t break fast enough I just do a go around
