PAPI descent rate tutorial


Here’s a really quick and easy rule of thumb to get an approximate descent rate once established on the PAPI approach lighting system. Here’s how it’s done:

(This should work on most IF Aircraft fairly well)

Just X your Groundspeed (GS) by 5!

Yep, that’s it. It’s that easy!

There’s also another (more accurate) way that I know of where you use the actual 3% gradient, but by the time you’ve finished calculating, you’re on the ground already. So this is far more practical!

But on another note I didn’t know that, I’ll have to try that out! Or stick with VNAV and APPR because I’m boring…
