The most successful of the first-generation jet airliners, the Boeing 707 entered commercial service 60 years ago today. Pan Am’s “Clipper America” completed the flight from New York to Paris in just over 8 hours, a journey that had formerly taken 12 hours with propeller-driven aircraft.

The 707 quickly became the most popular jet airliner of its time, with over 1,000 examples eventually built. It’s popularity led to rapid developments in airport terminals, runways, catering, baggage handling and reservations systems. The last scheduled 707 flight for passengers was operated by Saha Airlines of Iran in 2013.

Is it true that 707 doesn’t have autopilot on any of the models?

Untrue. I can confirm I have been on 707s with autopilot. It’s also a requirement for transatlantic public transport.
