Old Doha Airport to Reopen for 2022 FIFA World Cup

The old Doha International Airport has been reported to open in summer 2022 for the added traffic following the FIFA World Cup. Doha International Airport is located right next to the new Hamad International Airport.

“We are already activating. In 2020 and 2021 the airport will get a full refurbishment,” Akbar Al Baker, CEO of Qatar Airways, told ATW Online on the sidelines of the Trinity Forum today.

Doha International Airport was closed in 2014 in favor for the new Hamad International Airport, just 2.5 miles away. This was mainly due to the overcrowding of the airport, handling 33 million passengers per year when it could only hold 12 million. After its closing, it was initially planned to be demolished by the city and replaced with an urban project known as Al Sahan City.

Once the refurbishment is completed, the airport will pass an estimated total of 10 million people during the year of 2022. What are your thoughts on this?

Interesting. Finally some traffic into that airport. Other than people doing patterns from OTHH to OTBD and back around.

Are you sure it was closed in 2014?

Almost certain of it. At least it was closed to passengers.

The old airport was still used after the new one opened, for private jets (VIP terminal) and some military aircrafts. I understand also that its main terminal was used for staff training. Lived there up to the end if 2016.
