New Russian drone in action. Russia’s new heavy drone, the Okhotnik, which translates as the Hunter, took off for its first flight on August 3, 2019. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the flight of the new Russian drone continued for 20 minutes. The operator guided the UAV above the airfield at an altitude of about 600 meters several times before the aircraft performed a successful landing.
The test flight of the new combat drone created by Sukhoi Design Bureau was carried out at an airfield of the Ministry of Defense. The Hunter is a flying wing aircraft created with the use of special materials and coatings that make it practically invisible to radar detection tools. The drone is equipped with target equipment for various types of reconnaissance activities.
Its maximum takeoff weight makes up 20 tons, which makes it the heaviest drone to date. Experts note that the Hunter was designed to break through air defenses while working in tandem with Sukhoi Su-57 fifth-generation fighter. The Hunter is also known as a strategic drone. Its performance details remain classified.
