Did You Know?

✈️ O’Hare’s Secret Origin: Before it became a global aviation hub, O’Hare International Airport was a WWII aircraft factory! Originally known as Orchard Place, it produced the Douglas C-54 Skymaster. After the war, it transformed into one of the world’s busiest airports, but its history is still visible—the original Douglas aircraft factory building is now a part of the airport’s cargo area!

🌪️ Chicago’s Role in Air Traffic Control: Chicago O’Hare is not just about planes taking off and landing—it’s also the nerve center for much of the nation’s air traffic. The Chicago Air Route Traffic Control Center, located nearby, controls more than 91,000 square miles of airspace, guiding countless flights safely across the skies every day.

🔄 The O’Hare Vortex: O’Hare’s eight runways make it the airport with the most runways in the world! This unique setup allows the airport to operate smoothly even during Chicago’s notorious weather swings. But it also means that aviation enthusiasts can catch sight of all kinds of aircraft crisscrossing the skies—sometimes it feels like planes are coming from every direction!

🛫 The Ghost of Runway 14/32: Once upon a time, O’Hare’s runway 14/32 was one of the most iconic runways in the world, known for its challenging approaches and dramatic takeoffs. It was decommissioned in 2015 as part of the airport’s modernization program, but its legacy lives on in the hearts of pilots and spotters who remember the adrenaline of those steep climbs and sharp turns.

🌍 Global Connections: O’Hare is one of the few airports where you can catch a direct flight to all six inhabited continents. Whether it’s a quick hop to Canada or a long haul to Asia or Africa, O’Hare connects Chicago to the farthest corners of the globe. The sheer diversity of aircraft and airlines you’ll see here is a plane spotter’s dream.

💡 Pioneering Aviation Technology: O’Hare was the first major airport to feature an Automated People Mover (APM) system, known as the “ATS” (Airport Transit System), which shuttles passengers between terminals. The airport is also a leader in sustainability, with one of the largest airport-based solar farms in the U.S. and even an on-site apiary with over a million bees!

🚀 The Supersonic Saga: Did you know O’Hare was once a key stop for the Concorde? In the late 1970s and early 1980s, British Airways and Air France operated occasional Concorde flights to Chicago, allowing passengers to experience supersonic travel to and from the Windy City. Imagine spotting that sleek, needle-nosed aircraft against the Chicago skyline—it was a sight to behold!

🛩️ The TWA Terminal: Back in the golden age of aviation, TWA (Trans World Airlines) was a major player at O’Hare. The airline’s terminal was a mid-century modern masterpiece, designed by the famous architect Eero Saarinen, who also designed the iconic TWA Terminal at New York’s JFK Airport. While the terminal at O’Hare is long gone, it remains a nostalgic chapter in the airport’s rich history.

🏗️ O’Hare’s Expansion Marvel: O’Hare’s ongoing $8.5 billion expansion is one of the largest and most ambitious airport projects in history. When completed, it will add new terminals, gates, and a massive global terminal designed to handle the next generation of aircraft. This expansion is set to secure O’Hare’s position as one of the world’s premier airports for decades to come.

🦅 The Bird Strike Pioneers: O’Hare was one of the first airports to implement comprehensive wildlife management strategies to reduce bird strikes. The airport uses a combination of trained falcons, pyrotechnics, and habitat modification to keep the runways clear. Their innovative approach has made O’Hare a leader in aviation safety.

🌉 The Control Tower with a View: O’Hare’s South Air Traffic Control Tower, opened in 2015, is not only a critical part of the airport’s operations but also an architectural gem. Standing 220 feet tall, the tower provides controllers with panoramic views of the entire airfield. It’s designed to be energy-efficient, with a green roof and advanced systems that reduce its environmental impact.
