Saga Series Part 1: Akureyri
As the 2 other flyouts are posted, I will put a link down here:
Velkomin til Akureyrar!
Halló and welcome to Akureyri, commonly known in Iceland as Höfuðborg Norðurlands, or “the Capital of the North.” Akureyri is Iceland’s second largest city, but that’s not exactly saying much - Aukureyri is home to about 19,000 people. Being so far north, Akureyri is heaven for those seeking to see the Aurora Borealis, more commonly known as the Northern Lights, which are best visible during the Winter months, when the sun doesn’t rise for 22 hours at a time. During the Summer, when it’s nearly constantly bright outside, tourists flock from around the world to watch the humpback whales frolicking in the Eyjafjörður Bay, which Akureyri sits right at the base of. Though most of the attraction is in the nature, the town of Akureyri is known for its rich cultural history, dating back to the time of the Vikings.
Additionally, Akureyri is home to Iceland’s aviation museum as well as the Icelandic Archives, which contain over 500,000 documents all the way from present day to the Middle Ages.
Akureyri Airport
Akureyri Airport (AEY/BIAR) is Iceland’s 3rd busiest airport, behind Reykjavik and Keflavik. Scheduled air travel to Akureyri started in 1928 when Flugfélag Íslands (“Airline of Iceland”) began flying on seaplanes to Reykjavik, landing on the Eyjafjörður Bay and pulling into the city’s marina. The airline was short-lived, as it ceased operations after only three years. Another airline, Flugfélag Akureyrar (“Airline of Akureyri”), was founded in 1937 and in 1940 it changed its name to Flugfélag Íslands, though it was in no way affiliated with its predecessor. In 1944, Loftleiðir started flying from Reykjavík on Grumman Goose seaplanes, which added competition to the popular route.
It was not until the early 1950s that construction of the airport itself started on top of a landfill on the delta of Eyjafjörður river, a few kilometres from the town’s center. A new terminal was constructed in 1961 and expanded in 1970 and 1996. It was renovated in 2000 to better equip the airport for International flights. (- Wikipedia)
As tourism in Iceland has increased, so has demand for flights to the country’s north. Akuyeri is in the process of building a new terminal, slated to be completed at the end of 2024. Currently, the airport has a number of domestic services, as well as seasonal flights to the UK, Switzerland, and the Netherlands.
