Attention all pilots,
I’ve just completed a session controlling at Honolulu International Airport (HNL) on the Expert Server, and I’d like to make everyone aware of a significant issue affecting ATC communication.
Currently, there’s a problem where certain pilots are not receiving critical ATC instructions, such as vectors, altitude assignments, or runway clearances. This has led to some aircraft being labeled as NORDO (No Radio) or “unable to communicate.” As a result, pilots who interfere with other traffic are being disconnected from the server to maintain the safety and flow of operations. However, we are allowing NORDO aircraft to land if they do not interfere with active traffic.
During my session at HNL, I had approximately 3 NORDO aircraft that were allowed to land because they did not create conflicts or disrupt ongoing operations. However, pilots who did interfere were disconnected from the server in accordance with ATC procedures to prevent accidents or delays.
What Pilots Should Do If Experiencing Communication Issues:
1. Monitor Traffic and Use Caution:
If you suspect that you are not receiving ATC instructions, the first priority is to ensure you do not interfere with other aircraft. Keep a close eye on traffic around you using your radar screen and remain predictable in your movements.
2. Maintain Proper Separation:
Without receiving instructions, it’s vital to maintain visual or radar separation from other aircraft. Do not make any abrupt maneuvers that could confuse ATC or other pilots.
3. Proceed with Visual Landings:
If on approach and unable to communicate, attempt a visual approach while maintaining separation from other aircraft. If traffic is light and your actions are safe, you may be allowed to land without being disconnected.
4. Hold or Divert if Necessary:
If there is heavy traffic and you’re uncertain about the situation due to the lack of communication, it’s wise to hold or even divert to another airport until the issue is resolved or traffic clears.
ATC Actions:
• NORDO Aircraft Not Interfering: If you are not interfering with other traffic and can land safely, you will likely be allowed to continue your approach and land.
• NORDO Aircraft Interfering: If your lack of communication poses a risk to other aircraft or interrupts the flow of traffic, you will be disconnected from the server.
Our priority as controllers is to maintain safety and orderly traffic flow, so these decisions are made for the benefit of everyone flying.
Ongoing Efforts:
The IFATC team is aware of this issue, and staff are actively working on a fix to address the communication breakdown. We understand the frustration this causes and are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. In the meantime, we ask for your patience and cooperation.
If you experience this issue during your flight, please be mindful of the situation and follow the guidelines outlined above to avoid unnecessary disruptions. Your understanding and teamwork are appreciated as we work through this challenge.
Stay safe and thank you for your cooperation.
