Why is it that there are almost no atc on right now?
There are currently four airports open, which is a decent number. However, traffic is slow this morning due to the lack of a designated route for the day and the fact that the airports on today’s schedule are not very popular. This can be discouraging for some air traffic controllers to open as we are required to stay open for an hour. Nevertheless, we can expect traffic to increase as the morning progresses. 😂

As @KevinA said, we are volunteers and have to stay for at least an hour when we open a frequency so we often seek for trafic. We are encouraged but not restricted to open featured facilities.
Talking for myself I’m trying to open featured route or additional airports facilities when able but it’s not always possible like yesterday where traffic was totally absent.
There was no featured route and I decided to open LFPG to try to build traffic with featured airports since I was going to open for more than 3 hours.
Opening hubs like EGLL or KLAX or similar sometimes helps to build traffic with close by airports…
But I would say in a general way controllers are searching for fun so they are searching for trafic. They often go where trafic goes using to tools like this
As you can see, almost no one are going to today’s featured so controllers also follow the flow 🤷♂️
But yes some of us (and sometimes me like for my recent 12 hrs at OEJN) are still opening quiet places to try to serve the community on featured facilities…
To wrap it up, I would suggest to build your flight plan and fly your route even if no controllers. If lots of peeps are going the same place, a controller may appear during your flight
