New lens for my camera

I know this isn’t spotting but I could use some advice/help. My 55-200mm got jammed and now there is no way it’s going to get fixed so I’m starting to look at new lens. I have a Nikon D3100 which is pretty old but works very good for me and in Nikon terms, it can’t handing AF-P, it can handle AF-S, so if anyone could help me or give me advice on new lens with distance I’d appreciate that.

Within a reasonable price range you can get a 70-300 or a 55-300, if you’re willing to spend you can get a third party 100-400

Just going to back up @AndrewWu here, I got no idea about Nikon lenses, but that man is practically a walking encyclopedia on all things cameras so I’d definitely take a hard look at what he says. Unless someone here is like, a Nikon sales rep or something I don’t think you’re going to find someone much if at all more knowledgeable.

Im not planning to spend like $400-500 or more on lens so I am probably going to go with a 55-300mm

How much could you get in a used condition cause from my perspective I’d definitely go for a used

There are some stragglers in the 400s but most are mid 500s. Considering a new one is like 599 I’d skip the mid 500s and buy new, or try to cop one of the 400s

yep, I found a good deal on B&H for a 55-300mm, thanks for the help

Okay just be careful though because B&H almost always charges full price. For example, my 100-400 is 799 on B&H, but is 599 almost anywhere else

You could’ve told me that before I made my parents go to a physical B&H store and spend 800$ for my 100-400 🗿

Congratulations you played yourself (your parents(?))

Whatever you take, make sure it’s something that you’ll be willing to use these coming years.

I’m on the D3400 and went from a 18-55mm / 18-105mm (borrowed from a D3200) combo to now a 55-200mm (probably the one you lost).

On my side I’ll be moving to fujifilm but a friend of mine has the 70-300 and it works absolutely fine.

However the newer model is not compatible with your D3100. It has one of these smoother focus ring that roll all around, make sure to check before getting one!!

Edit : you mentioned the non compatibility above my bad

They went to New York to get it?

Yep, I found a 55-300mm AF-S which is compatible and hopefully not scam 🥴
