New flyer question

Hi, I’ve made a new account, I quit IF 2 years ago as my iPad seemed to not be able to do it anymore and I lost interest in aviation.

Today I did my first ever flight, and remarkably on the expert server. It went well but my descent rate was quite steep. I used simbrief for my FPL and specifically descent.

I have lost a lot of knowledge since I quit but wanted to regain some, any tips on how to get better or does someone have any handbooks they recommend?

Have you used VNAV? It is the easiest way to get a shallow and uneventful descent.

As @bizjetguy6 mentioned, used VNAV plus when you use Simbrief, it adds Arrivals into that airport. Rather than eyeballing it, use the arrival procedure’s altitude prefixes. It descent’s your plane much smoother plus if you feel the altitude is much steeper, change your altitude for that fix so it’s easier to manage.

Do you remember how to use airport’s PROCs (procedures) for Arrivals and Approaches?

  • On the map, click the
  • Select Tab with Arrivals, choose the one to your liking or the one that is ATC preferred (if airport is busy). If you use SimBrief, then that would be done for you.
  • SimBrief does not include approach in to the plan, so you will need to add that in as well. After you selected your STAR, go over to Approach tab and choose the approach you want to use. Easiest to use and most controllers would prefer ILS approach.
  • Ensure that your VNAV button is switched on before you start your descend, I recommend around 30 min prior arrival time.
  • As you are descending, watch out for your speed, if V/S is flashing yellow, you are going to fast. Slow down to prevent overshooting.
  • When you will be making your last turn towards the runway or ILS cone, hit that APR button and continue to slowdown. You are looking at 180kts at start of the cone, 160 half way through and 140kts on final. Those are just suggested numbers and speed will vary a lot on airplane model and its load.

Alternatively, just have a look at any YouTube videos of professional pilots flying in IF and see how they do all of the above!

@hazza30 To add onto what @RomeoStuff24 said, if a STAR has an altitude range saying you need to be between FL280-FL240 by this specific fix, I always manually change that to the lowest altitude is has, its less stressful for me personally.

That’s what I used, the altitudes set by simbrief seemed set to a steep descent.

Simbrief altitudes and the procudures used in it are not the same as the ones in infinite flight. Usually simbrief has you higher than you should be approaching the airport and the best way to go after importing a flight plan is to review it and follow the steps by @Maxim.k42 and choose your same approach STAR and approach and delete the old star and you should be good.
