New Category - Group Flights

Good News!

You asked, we heard! Group flight topics are something that have been requested for a long time now. We have listened to those requests as always, however it has taken a while to decide on what is the best way to host them on the forum. A few things we have considered have been:

  • How to ensure post quality
  • How to format the posts
  • Will the posts flood the forum of other topics?
  • How will adding support for these topics benefit the wider community?
  • Will the additional topics lead to a higher level of posting that may add extra pressure for our voluntary moderators?
  • Is the forum the place to host group flight topics?

Well, the short answer for all of the above questions is ‘we figured it out’. For now, group flight topics will be allowed. There is a new category for them found at #live:groupflights. We hope that the addition of these topics will add benefits to the community by allowing for easier planning and networking between our members. Additionally, we hope it can bring new members to the forum, continuing to help to make it the central hub for the Infinite Flight community!

Thread Layout and Advice

Group flight topics must be formatted in a certain way. This is the same as #live:events:

  • Flight Title : The summary of your flight. Keep it short!
  • ICAO : The 4-letter airport code the flight’s significant location. (e.g. KDEN)
  • DD : Day of the month (e.g. 18th of June = 18)
  • HHMM : Time of your flight in Zulu time (e.g. 1pm CST (UTC -6) = 1900)
  • Z : Simply the letter ‘Z’ to indicate the time is in Zulu time
  • MON : 3-letter abbreviation for the month of your flight (e.g. January = JAN)
  • YY : Last 2 digits of the year of your flight (e.g. 2015 = 15)

Please ensure you double check your time conversion to Zulu time!

Example: SAS Retro A319 @ EGLL - 041830ZMAR18

  • Time in the title must always be in Zulu time. You are free to include times for the popular timezones in the content of your post. (Click here to convert to and from Zulu time). Remember that events will be converted to any user’s local timezone when they see the event displayed on Infinite Flight’s home menu!
  • Once the flight ends, please edit your topic title and add “[Closed]” to the front of the title:
    Blue Angels @ KSFO - 030900ZAUG18
    [Closed] Blue Angels @ KSFO - 030900ZAUG18

The time of the group flight thread must be in Zulu time as with events. They must have contained somewhere in the topic the basic information of the flight, formatted as so:

  • Aircraft and Livery: xxx
  • Route: xxx
  • Time of Departure: xxx
  • Server: xxx

Please add any other information in a separate section or within the text. This is because we want these topics to be an easy quick reference for members.

  • Aircraft and Livery: A319
  • Route: LTBA - EGLL
  • Time of Departure: 1800Z
  • Server: Expert

Event Thread or Group Flight Thread?

To keep it clear and remove as much confusion as to the differences between these, we have placed some restrictions on group flight topics. A group flight topic must adhere to the following rules:

  • Take place within 3 hours of being posted
  • Not affiliated with a VA or VO
  • No assigning of gates or pilot slots

All other flights will be considered as events. Please keep them to the #live:events category. These events are still reserved for TL2 members. All members can post group flights.

Join me flying from Istanbul to London! The flight is around 4.5 hours. We will depart from runway 35L, using the JSON3A departure. From there we head north west through central Europe, arriving in to Heathrow from the west for an ILS approach into runway 27R. The flight plan is as followed:

I look forward to you all joining me!

Please be aware that rules are subject to change at any time without notice. The moderators and staff reserve the right to remove or delete a group flight topic at any time.

Great news to wake up to Misha! Awesome move from Infinite Flight

I feel like group flights a rather something for more specific organisations using different Things to communicate (slack and so on). Such as VAs and VOs for example. A Forum is kind of a wrong place for fast paste communication. However I like the idea of getting it here, as IFC is the place, you will find anyone at.

The vast majority of people are not part of a VA or VO. We want to allow everyone to participate in flights with others despite this. The new category was added so you can mute posts if you wish!

Great news, Misha. thank you for the update. Haven’t exaclty understood this part:

Only TL2 (members) + will be able to post there? Just a bit confused:)

Thank you again for letting us know about this new change!

There you go!

I would like to ask if we can lax the rule a bit about no VA/VO Postings… Many VAs and especially the VARB post group flights from time to time and I think that this category would be more fit then a little event thread

Do we post them in #live?

Not for now. Perhaps in the future.

Please read this topic again…carefully 😉

#GroupFlights can be utilized by anyone, regardless of TL, as long as the flight falls into the requirements above. Anything more intricate, tied to a VA, requiring gate assignments, beginning more than 3 hours from the time of post, etc needs to be placed in #live:events which requires TL2.

No you post in #live:flights

Great. Thank you Tyler!

Sure! Now the question is who will take the #live:groupflights maiden voyage!?

This seems very interesting. Let’s see who will create the first group flight 👀

Testing it out right now ;)

Another amazing category added to IFC!

I can’t seem to access this new category :(

I felt that this was necessary before as there are flights of smaller significance than events that people like to hold just for others to accompany them. The best part is: all members! Yeet! Glad to see this put to use!
