Near Disaster - C-123 Provider "Thunderpig" Close Call @ Geneseo Airshow

The Fairchild C-123 Provider was a glider-derived military transport that was introduced in 1956. Only a handful of airworthy C-123s remain, and yesterday that number was nearly reduced by one.

The aircraft departed the grass airstrip at D52 (Geneseo, NY) for a demonstration as a part of the National Warplane Museum’s annual airshow. It proceeded to fly a few laps around the crowd before recovering. However, on recovery, the aircraft suddenly swerved right off of the presumably packed down grass landing strip into the softer dirt adjacent to it, nearly causing its right wingtip to dig. While I can’t say anything for certain, I think this was probably due to the strong ~20 knot gusting crosswinds and the plane’s glider-derived origins. The pilot was able to recover and the aircraft came to rest in the dirt further down the runway. It was then able to taxi back to the ramp under its own power and the show continued, so I assume there was not any major damage to the aircraft.

You can watch a video of this incident here from potatogaming1486 (not my video), but be aware that there is some harsh language.
