My quest to control at least an airport in all the countries in my assigned ATC region (EU West). Completed!

Hello, everyone!

As we all know, starting from May 1st , Infinite Flight will launch the region assignment program, allowing controllers to select one of ten global regions around the world, control any airport within that regional boundary at any time, and remain within their area of operation on a more permanent basis.

The plan:

Inspired from fellow IFATC member Cole, better known as AsternAviation, I decided to control at least an airport in all the countries in my assigned ATC region (Europe West).

Why am I doing this?

This is a great opportunity to spread traffic around the Europe West region and having a chance to explore more my region.

Current Progress

Please note that Greenland will not be included in the map although featured in the Europe West region.

The new ATC region format has arrived!

Starting off today, I controlled two airports:

Zurich (LSZH), in Switzerland, as Approach and Departure;

Narsarsuaq (BGBW), in Greenland, as Tower.

Two very different airports with a major aspect in common: the stunning landscape!

Too bad Greenland isn’t on the map 😂

Anyways, great yet difficult challenge. Looking forward to seeing your progress. Good luck!

Indeed it is. Thanks!

Now the question is, will you be doing it within 30 days? Then switching regions and doing it all again?

I will likely finish this within a month as I control daily. Then, perhaps, I will switch region.

Where is it?

In the Europe West region.

I don’t see the new ATC region map on the IFATC website or anywhere? Has it not started yet?

It has officially started today, May 1st 2021.

Take a look at this blog post for more informations: New ATC Region Assignments

So ATC can only control at airports that have events or anywhere they would like 24/7?

Anywhere they would like in their assigned region. Every Tuesday will be an ATC free day (from 0600Z Tuesday to 0600Z Wednesday) where controllers may open anywhere in the world regardless of region assignment. Additionally, Apprentice, Specialist Check Ride, and ATC Supervisors will be exempt from region assignments. On FNFs or officials Infinite Flight event, controllers will be exempt from regional boundaries and must fully staff the published event airports before opening any other airports in the world.

Ah, thanks. Do you know when the regions map is going to be uploaded on the stats page on the IFATC website?

We don’t know. I’d say soon. Chris_S is in charge of the website.

Really good idea! And by the way is the map created using the same website as Tyler’s ATC featured map?

Indeed it is!

I’m so tempted to do something like this but hey, some originality is needed right?

Today, May 2nd, I controlled Reykjavik (BIRK), in Iceland as ground tower and ATIS.

Reykjavik is the capital of Iceland. It is located in the southwestern part of the country and it is the world’s northernmost capital of a sovereign state.
