My First Solo Flight

Hello IF community,

yesterday was a day I’ll never forget, because I had my first solo flight at 15 yrs old. I’m a member of a gliding club in Germany and took to the skies with the ASK 21. I have only started gliding three months ago, and am very lucky to have been able to fly solo before the season ends .

I am almost certain that this solo wouldn’t have been possible this year without my practice in Infinite Flight over the years. I am really impressed of how IF really did help me get a feel for flying, especially when landing. So kudos to the team that created this fantastic sim!

I would absolutely recommend gliding to everyone: It is much cheaper than powered flying; you get to know lots of nice people, who also are also fascinated by aviation; the views are amazing; you are literally in charge of an aircraft (how cool is that?)

Who else here has been up in a glider and what was your experience?

Here is my landing (it’s actually my second solo):

Yeah, been flying C172s for around 2 years. I think more GA pilots should get/take the opportunity to fly gliders. They are great for teaching airspeed and power (altitude/potential energy) management!

Thanks. Of course you’ll get this far. I’m only a third or less of the way to getting the liscence, because in germany there are three parts to the training: Examination A, B and C. Probably similar in the US and UK I’d imagine. I’ve only passed my A exam so far, which contained the most important aspects of flying. B and C goes on with stuff like advanced turning, thermalling, navigation, outlanding, etc,…

Good luck to you, too!

Congratulations on this amazing achievement! I’m currently working on my PPL and I can only imagine how I am going to feel on my first solo flight :grimacing:

You’ll never forget it! It was such a weird and exhilarating feeling knowing you’re alone. But as long as you’ve had a solid instructor who knows what they’re doing and you’re doing (that you’re ready), you’ll do great!

My uncle and aunt met through gliding. They were married forever (years before I was born). They met because he was her gliding instructor. Aviation was the seed of their lifelong bond.

And it all started with gliding. Their gliding friends were lifelong.

Awesome!
