For a brief time, between 1993 and 2001, Korean Air operated a fleet of 9x MD-82s and 7x MD-83, one of the latter of which crashed as KE1533. Pictured is HL7203, one of the MD-82s, taxiing at Nagoya-Komaki in 1994.

MD-80. Com: Most sources say that CAACÂŽs initial order was for five MD-82s. Later, an agreement was signed between McDD and SAIC for the final assembly of MD-80s in the PR of China. CAAC were later separated into regional branches. China Eastern and China Northern became the ones with MD-80-equipment.

In the mid-1990s, McDonaldâs teamed up with Swiss airline Crossair and tour operator Hotelplan to create a promotional aircraft known as the McPlane.
The bright red passenger plane flew holiday routes from Basel to Mediterranean destinations like Crete. Inside, the cabin was decked out with McDonaldâs branding, including red seats and yellow âMâ headrests, and the in-flight menu featured items like McBurgers, McNuggets, milkshakes, and soft drinks.
Fries were left off the menu because deep-frying wasnât safe on the plane, but kids still got toys and even tours of the cockpit.

Some AA Mad Dog action at BNA back in the hub days. Hopefully, if we get this added, we can sometimes combination of the black and gray radome colors and the classic bullet and screwdriver tailcones.

8 years ago I recorded Andesâs MD-83 LV-AYD taking off from Aeroparque, it was a LOUD one! Andes has now changed these classic aircraft for the more modern B737-700 and 800s.
@TheCanadianTSB 10 years? Man, time flies fast!

HAPPY 10 YEARS TO THIS MD-80 FEATURE REQUEST!!
As of today, (if I am correct that is) this feature request turns exactly 10 years old!!
I thought it would be fun to see where the specific aircraft from the feature request is today, and good news, it is still flying, and has even flown as recently as yesterday!
The aircraft, built as an MD-88, MSN 1849, was delivered to Delta in April 1991 as N978DL, and it was in service with them for about 29 years and one month, retiring in June 2020. In 2021, it was acquired by USA Jet Airlines and was converted to a freighter, and it was re-registered to N832US. 24.5 years old when this feature request was made, it is still going strong today at 34.5 years old, hopefully it will keep flying for a while!
N978DL when it was still brand new, wearing the Widget livery, at around a month old, it was delivered to Delta on April 24th, 1991. (Picture taken June 1st, 1991.)

That is for sure a must-have! Not only do they operate a sizable fleet of MD-80s (for todayâs standards that is), they also fly to plenty of destinations!
And very fun fact! One of their 8 MD-80s, N803WA, is one of the very few (35) MD-80s that was made in China! These are also (possibly) what led to the ARJ-21âs design, pretty cool.

Canât believe itâs been 10 years. Thatâs about as long as Iâve been using Infinite Flight. Also great to see that some of the ex-Delta Mad Dogs are still flying.

Departed Wings: In 1990 two airline executives sought to establish a new airline hub city to cater to East Coast and West Coast flights. The pair settled on Reno, Nevada to establish hub service as the city was under-served and had the potential for expansion due to the gambling market. Reno Air was born and using ex-Midway Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-80s started service on July 1, 1992, from Reno to Seattle and Los Angeles. Within a year Reno Air had added six additional cities including non-stop service to Minneapolis St. Paul and Kansas City. With American Airlines departure as a focus city at San Jose, Reno Air took advantage of the additional gate space and established San Jose as a âminiâ hub in 1994. By 1996, Reno Air had grown to serve twenty-one cities across the U.S. including international service to Vancouver, Canada, was operating twenty-nine MD-80 and MD-90 aircraft, and had finally posted an annual profit. Within a year however, Reno Air started to suffer as its charter service on the East Coast and certain stagnant routes caused financial stress. New management changes saw routes trimmed, aircraft returned, and personnel laid off in a hope to return to profitability. The losses continued and in an ironic twist, American Airlines agreed to purchase Reno Air in November 1998 for a cost of $124 million. American was hoping to use Reno Airâs established north-west route network to feed its east-west routes from San Jose. The sale was completed in February 1999, and Reno Air ceased to exist on August 30, 1999 bringing a close to the âBiggest Little Airline in the World.â
