Lufthansa joins British Airways in suspending all Flights to Cairo (Egypt)

Hello everyone,

Lufthansa and British Airways just announced that they will suspend all flights from and to Cairo.

A spokesman said in a statement tonight: "As safety is the number one priority of Lufthansa, the airline has temporarily suspended its flights to Cairo today as a precaution, while further assessment is being made.”

There is no further information available regarding the reason behind it however Egyptian airport security sources told the Reuters news agency that British staff had been checking security at Cairo airport on Wednesday and Thursday. The suspensions might be a result because of those checks.

Just call your ambassady then, if there’s such threats you might get a free flight in a MRTT

On a serious note, why is it only some airlines? What’s about Air France / KLM group for example?

Below might throw some light on the situation:

Latest update:

Summary - On 20 July 2019, British Airways announced that it was suspending its flights to Cairo for seven days.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advise against all travel to the Governorate of North Sinai, due to continuing criminal activity and terrorist attacks on police and security forces that have resulted in deaths.

The FCO advise against all but essential travel:

  • to the Governorate of South Sinai, except the area within the Sharm el Sheikh perimeter barrier, which includes the airport and the areas of Sharm el Maya, Hadaba, Naama Bay, Sharks Bay and Nabq.
  • by air to or from Sharm el Sheikh.
  • to the area west of the Nile Valley and Nile Delta regions, excluding the coastal areas between the Nile Delta and Marsa Matruh (as shown on the map)

Terrorists are very likely to try to carry out attacks in Egypt. Although most attacks occur in North Sinai, there is a risk of terrorist attacks across the country. Attacks could be indiscriminate, affecting Egyptian security forces, religious sites, large public gatherings and places visited by foreigners. There is a heightened threat of terrorist attacks in or around religious sites and during religious festivals, such as the month of Ramadan and the Christmas period (including Coptic Christmas), when terrorist groups have sometimes called for attacks. Terrorist attacks have occurred over local holiday weekends. Terrorists have attacked tourists in Egypt in the past. There is a heightened threat of terrorist attacks targeting Coptic Christians from extremists linked to Daesh-Sinai in Egypt.

I feel bad for all the BA and LH passengers that spent so much money to fly to Cairo for their vacation just for their flight to be canceled

AF/KLM may not deem this as much of a risk or will join them shortly.
