Today as of this topic’s creation is the day. Lufthansa Cargo has now officially retired their very last McDonnell Douglas MD-11F. Not only that, but it seems it was the last MD-11 registered in Europe. It’d be great seeing a bit more attention to this iconic aircraft.
About Lufthansa Cargo
Founded as German Cargo in 1977 (although the aircraft were painted in a Lufthansa Cargo livery), the airline was reberanded into Lufthansa Cargo in 1993, with IATA code LH and ICAO code GEC. The airline’s main hub is Frankfurt Airport, the 13th busiest airport in terms of cargo in 2019. The airline operated a total of 19 MD-11s between June 1998 and October 2021.
About the MD-11
Essentially an upgraded McDonnell Douglas DC-10, the aircraft first flew in 1990, however delivering less than promissed to costumers and with the arrival of the Boeing 777, the aircraft flopped, with 200 airframes being manufactured. The aircraft was quite sucessful with freight-carrying airlines, such as, well, Lufthansa Cargo.
In Infinite Flight, the aircraft is slightly outdated, being released in December 2017 and featuring a very basic interior with very basic 3D objects, however still featuring working cargo doors and wingflex. Overall, a very interesting aircraft to fly if you want to try something different.
