Lots of waypoints in Gulf of Mexico

Yesterday, I was flying over the Gulf of Mexico when I realized that there are so many way points over the Gulf of Mexico, all in a big, neat row. Is there any reason for that?

I think they might be for oil rigs but don’t quote me on that

Like there’s an oil rig at each of those waypoints? That seems like a lot…

Nope. Foreflight shows some weather stations scattered across the gulf which could indicate an oil rig. But to answer the question fully: The waypoints do not exactly represent an individual oil rig, but some could.

Ohhh idk then.

These waypoints could be there like how the Atlantic has their own waypoints. Maybe they are there just for navigational purposes.
