Hey!
Both the Global Update and Project Metal were major milestones in Infinite Flight’s history, but in terms of time and impact, the Global Update (2017) is often considered the most significant and longest-awaited.

The Global Update introduced:

  • Worldwide HD scenery
  • Live multiplayer across the entire globe
  • A new scenery streaming system

It took several years of development, testing, and optimization before it finally launched. Many long-time users recall waiting for it since around 2015, with teasers and progress updates being shared over time.

However, Project Metal is also a huge ongoing project. It’s a complete overhaul of the sim’s graphics engine to support better performance, advanced lighting, 3D objects, and potentially new visual effects in the future. It’s more of a long-term investment rather than a single update.

  • Based on what I’ve found, the Global Update was the longest individual update to release, while Project Metal is the longest development process overall since it spans multiple updates.

Hope this helps clear things up!

Global seemed like a 3 or 4 year time in transit. Flying a flight over 3 hours was unheard of unless you were doing boxes around the map. You had KLAX, KSAN, and KNUC. Nothing more.
